The homeowner noticed that the skirting boards on the external wall of the ensuite were swollen and damp to the touch.
They observed minor hairline cracking in the grout lines of the shower floor, which is common in estate homes due to slight slab movement.
There was a persistent musty smell in the ensuite, even after deep cleaning, which suggested moisture was trapped beneath the tiles.
They were concerned that the original "volume builder" may have taken shortcuts during the construction phase, a common issue in rapidly developed areas like Officer.
Our inspection confirmed a critical failure in the original waterproofing installation. We found that the waterstop angle—a crucial component required by AS 3740 to prevent water from wicking out of the shower area—was completely missing at the doorway.
Furthermore, the waterproofing membrane had been applied too thinly and had torn due to thermal expansion, allowing water to track under the tiles and saturate the timber stud frame.
The bedding sand-cement mix was holding water like a sponge, keeping the slab wet and causing the moisture to wick up the plasterboard walls in the adjacent hallway.
This confirmed that a simple "reseal" would be useless, as the water was escaping from underneath the tiles, not just through them.

The issue was caused by non-compliant application of the waterproofing membrane during the home's original construction.
The builder failed to install a perimeter waterstop angle, meaning there was no physical barrier preventing sub-tile moisture from escaping the shower zone.
Over time, daily shower use saturated the screed, and without a way to drain effectively, the water migrated into the walls and flooring.
Free quotes and quick resealing jobs don’t uncover the real cause of leaks — they only cover them up. This homeowner could easily have been sold another temporary patch like a regrout or silicone touch-up, which would have trapped moisture and worsened the rot.

We presented two options: a shower-only rebuild or a complete bathroom renovation. Given the extent of the water damage to the plasterboard, the homeowner chose a full bathroom renovation to ensure the home was restored to a safe, compliant standard.

I highly recommend The Shower Man Melbourne. We needed a full bathroom remodel and even during COVID-19 restrictions, the team were highly professional, incredibly responsive, good communicators and worked hard to meet our needs. They were fantastic, and I would not hesitate to use them again.

Professional high quality service from quote to planning to buildout. No short cuts. Very pleased, will hire again in future if I need more bathroom work done.

If I could give them more than 5 stars, I would. Could not ask for more – all of the team over-performed from start to finish, and completely replaced our tired leaky old shower on time and on budget. I’m recommending The Shower Man to everyone I know.
